The Ultimate Guide to Travel in Doha, Qatar | 4 Day Itinerary Included

After my Indian bestie made me watch Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives on Netflix (and yes I loved it), I got excited about the idea of visiting Doha and experiencing the Qatar Airways QSuites, rated the best business class seat in the world.

I got the opportunity to visit Doha on my way from Karachi to London for my two-month solo Europe trip thanks to the Discover Qatar program.

Image features a spacious business class pod suite in Qatar Airways QSuites Business Class Airbus A350-1000. Lights are dim and purple and the screen is on showing seat 5K.

I also got to experience QSuites for my 8 hour flight, for just around USD$180 thanks to my Avios points! While I traveled in business class, the Discover Qatar program is available to folks in any class.

I had the BEST time in Doha—I felt so safe, even at night, and there was so much to see and do that unfortunately I didn’t get to do everything on my itinerary in just one day.

I would recommend 3-4 full days in Doha, to give you enough time to experience all it has to offer while not rushing.

I highly recommend Doha for solo female travelers or newbie travelers, because of the ease of getting around, the safety, as well as activities.

Best Time to Visit Doha

The best time to visit Doha is between November and March, when the weather is cooler.

With daytime temperatures ranging from 18°C to 25°C (65°F to 77°F), as opposed to 35°C to 45°C (95°F to 113°F) in the summer—and more comfortable for outdoor activities.

Note that there will be more tourists and accommodations may be more expensive as a result.

How to Get to Doha

Flights from North America to Doha currently operate through Hamad International Airport (DOH).

Doha International Airport (the older airport, prior to Hamad) is not regularly used for major international flights anymore.

Most major carriers, like Qatar Airways, American Airlines, and British Airways, serve Doha via Hamad International Airport instead.

Image features an area in Hamad International Airport in Doha Qatar filled with modern architecture and indoor greenery.

The airport is located just outside the city center, and you can easily catch a taxi or Uber to your hotel, which should take about 15-20 minutes depending on traffic.

Or, if you’re a budget traveler like me, you can also take the metro from DOH and reach the city center within the same amount of time.

How to Get Around in Doha

1. Uber and Karwa Taxis: Uber operates extensively in Doha, making it easy to get around with just your phone.

Karwa taxis are also a popular option and can be booked via the Karwa app or hailed from the street.

Both services are reliable, though I opted for Uber since I use it worldwide and prefer to stick to one app.

2. Metro: Doha’s underground Metro system is modern, clean, and efficient.

It’s a great way to travel between major areas, and trains even have family areas perfect for solo female travelers, as well as a goldclub section for a premium experience with fewer people.

Fares range from ~USD$0.55 to ~USD$12 depending on your fare class and whether you purchase single journey or a day pass.

3. Trams: Doha has multiple tram lines including the Lusail Tram, Msheireb Tram, and Education City Tram.

Fares on the Lusail tram range from ~USD$0.55 to ~USD$1.65 depending on whether you purchase single journey or a day pass.

The Msheireb and Education City trams are free to ride.

Image featured a purple tram running through a street in Doha Qatar, with "Msheireb" written on the tram in Arabic.

4. Rent a Car: If you’re planning on exploring outside of Doha, renting a car is a good idea.

The road infrastructure is excellent, and driving through the desert or down the coast is a unique experience. Just be mindful of local driving rules and speed limits.

5. Walking: Doha has some very walkable areas, especially along the Corniche or within Souq Waqif.

The city is clean and safe, though the heat can make walking uncomfortable in the summer.

Where to Stay in Doha

There are tons of nice neighborhoods in Doha to choose from. Here’s a breakdown of top areas to stay in:

1. West Bay: West Bay is where you want to be for a modern experience with ocean views.

Situated right in the heart of the city’s skyline, this area is home to many upscale international hotel chains like Hilton Doha, St. Regis, and W Doha.

2. The Pearl: For a more luxurious vacation, consider staying in The Pearl, an artificial island that offers high-end apartments, waterfront dining, and luxury hotels like The Ritz-Carlton Doha and Hilton Doha The Pearl.

3. Al Sadd If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option, Al Sadd has a range of affordable 5 star  hotels and is just a short drive or metro ride from the major attractions.

It’s less touristy, giving you a feel for day-to-day life in Doha, and is full of restaurants, cafes, and shops, giving you easy access to everything you need.

4. Al Waab: If you’re looking for a quieter, family-friendly area, Al Waab is ideal.

With spacious parks and easy access to Villaggio Mall, it’s perfect for those who want a more laid-back suburban feel while still being close to shopping and entertainment.

5. Msheireb: Msheireb Downtown Doha is a smart city known for sustainable urban living, with all buildings Gold or Platinum LEED-certified.

Msheireb is close to attractions like Souq Waqif and the Museum of Islamic Art, making for a comfortable experience. This is where I stayed while I was in Doha.

I stayed in the Four Points by Sheraton Doha, which was super close to attractions, in a safe area, and had a metro stop right outside the hotel.

Doha is a modern city that will give you a lux experience. The interesting thing about Doha, and Qatar in general—is how small it is. You can get from one end of Qatar to the other in just 2 hours.

This means no matter where you stay, you won’t be far from attractions, so think about the type of experience you want and what your budget is to determine where to book your stay.

Doha has tons of 4 and 5 star hotels all over, so you have a lot of options!

4-Day Doha Itinerary

Day 1: Museums, Mina District and Souq Waqif

  • National Museum of Qatar: Explore Qatar’s rich heritage and culture in this immersive museum with incredible architecture. Even if you’re not into museums, you definitely want to stop by and take some photos outside the super insta-worthy building designed by the famous French architect, Jean Nouvel.
  • Museum of Islamic Art: Located at the end of Doha’s Corniche, this globally renowned museum is a must-visit if you’re interested in learning more about Islamic Art— plus, this is a great photo op featuring architecture, greenery and the Arabian Sea. Look out for cultural activities here, such as performances by the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, film screenings and art and calligraphy classes for the community, which MIA hosts regularly. You can also attend their weekend bazaar in the winter months, featuring locals selling food, drinks, handicrafts, clothing, jewelry and more.
  • Mina District: Mina District is an unreal neighborhood! With its pastel buildings, it looks like it’s right out of a painting! Explore the architecture and art by strolling through its cobblestone streets, and take lots of photos.
  • Souq Waqif: Be sure to wander through Doha’s famous open-air marketplace, where you can find clothes, colorful spices, souvenirs and lots more! End your day here in case you buy anything so you don’t have to carry it around with you all day.

Day 2: The Pearl-Qatar and Katara Cultural Village

  • Katara Cultural Village: Start your day by visiting Katara Cultural Village, known as Doha’s go-to destination for art, culture and cuisine. Visit the Katara Mosque and Gold Mosque, walk around the amphitheater, grab a bite right by 21 High Street, marvel at the art in the galleries—Qatar Museum Gallery and Katara Art Center (KAC), explore the Al Thuraya Planetarium, walk through Katara Hills, birdwatch by the pigeon towers, and or enjoy water activities at the beach, including speed boat rides, knee boarding, parasailing and water skiing.
  • The Pearl-Qatar: After enjoying your day at Katara Cultural Village, head over to The Pearl to enjoy a bite by the sea, or book a dhow boat tour via Viator.

Day 3: Desert Safari and Inland Sea

Book a day trip to the desert, where you can go dune bashing and watch the sunset over the sand. Don’t miss the chance to visit the Inland Sea (Khor Al Adaid), where the desert meets the water. It’s one of the most stunning landscapes in Qatar.

Day 4: Doha Corniche, Museum of Illusions, West Bay Beach

  • Doha Corniche: This 7-km waterfront promenade offers stunning views of the city’s skyline and the Arabian Gulf. Perfect for a scenic walk or bike ride, the Corniche is a must-visit for solo travelers looking to capture the essence of Doha.
  • Museum of Illusions Doha: If you love interactive exhibits, this museum is another must-visit! The Museum of Illusions offers tons of photo ops in the form of visual experiences and optical illusions.
  • West Bay Beach Doha: WBB is a great spot for both travelers looking to relax and unwind, as well as anyone up for more activities. There’s also an accessibility ramp to allow people with physical disabilities to experience the water as well. The beach has an outdoor cinema, volleyball, international food trucks, and sunbeds. Come here later in the day so you can stay to watch the sunset!

Day Trips and Mini Trips from Doha

Qatar’s compact size makes it easy to explore beyond the city limits. Here are a few recommendations:

Lusail

Just a short ~30 drive from Doha, Lusail is Qatar’s futuristic city offering modern architecture, entertainment, and green spaces.

Explore the Marina District or take a stroll along Lusail’s scenic waterfront promenade.

If you’re a fan of sleek, contemporary vibes, this up-and-coming city is the perfect spot for an afternoon escape, with plenty of cafes, parks, and shopping to enjoy.

Lusail is also the home of Lusail Stadium, where the 2022 FIFA World Cup was held.

Al Zubarah Fort

Situated in Qatar’s northwestern region, Al Zubarah is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This impressive site—once a fishing town and bustling trading port—features an awe-inspiring city wall, ancient residential palaces and houses, markets, industrial areas, and mosques.

Purple Island

If you’re into kayaking, head to this mangrove sanctuary in Al Khor, where you can row surrounded by nature.

The island derives its name from its historical significance as a central location for the Kassite-controlled purple dye industry during the second millennium BC.

This industry flourished during that era due to the association of purple with royalty, making it highly valued.

Practical Tips for Travelers in Doha

  • Safety: Qatar is extremely safe, especially as a woman. It’s generally safe to walk around at night.
  • Dress moderately: While Qatar is safe, it’s a good idea to dress somewhat modestly, especially when visiting mosques or government buildings. Personally, I wore short sleeves and felt fine, but I wouldn’t go further than that. Keep a scarf or a thin cardigan with you just in case.
  • Currency: The Qatari Riyal is the currency, and it’s easy to exchange or withdraw at ATMs around the city.
  • Transport: Doha has an excellent metro system, and taxis are abundant. Download the Karwa app for easy cab access, or just use Uber like I did.
  • Heat: The summer months can be intense, so pack sunscreen, a hat, and hydrate constantly if you’re visiting during this time.

Conclusion

I had stopped over in Doha many times while traveling between Pakistan and Canada, but I always overlooked it as a travel destination, so a big thank you to my bestie for making me watch FLOBW!

Doha is now one of my top recommended places for solo female travelers, and would make for a great first solo trip too.

The best part is, Qatar Airways has many flights with a layover in Doha, so it’s easy to have a 4-5 day trip here through the Discover Qatar program.

There’s lots to do in Doha, so it’s the perfect destination for both relaxed vacationers and adventurous travelers, including solo female travelers because of how safe it is. Happy Travels!
